a place with character

In the heart of the porcelain city

Surrounded by vineyards and just steps from the Elbe River, a place awaits you that breathes history – and at the same time looks to the future with open eyes. The listed walls of the former winegrower's estate have been sensitively restored and today combine historical charm with modern comfort.

The Faces Behind the Golden Barrel

A team with heart

What makes this house special are the people who bring it to life. Passionate hosts who enjoy a smile, listen attentively, and keep your wishes in mind – unobtrusively and honestly.

Under the management of the Günther family, our dedicated team ensures that you feel comfortable from the very beginning. Both in front of and behind the scenes, people work with dedication and care to make your stay special – personal, warm, and reliable.

The fact that many of our guests like to return is thanks to this sense of community. And to the conviction that genuine hospitality is always palpable.

From winery to a place of well-being

Old walls, new stories

The roots of our hotel reach back to the 18th century. Where winegrowers once lived and worked, we now welcome our guests with a sense of authenticity. The listed buildings have been lovingly preserved and gently modernized – creating a place that makes history tangible without stagnating. Learn more about the history of our hotel.

Of winemakers, cigars and a new beginning: The whole story

The roots of our present-day hotel village reach far back in time. A small vintner's house – the origin of the property – can first be seen on a map from 1650. By 1829, an inn and a barn had been added. An entry in the land register also dates from this period.

"The owner of the property has the right to sell the country wine he himself produced and purchased, in the measure established by the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Dresden on January 8, 1780 […]."

Around the turn of the century, the building that is now the Weißburgunder House initially housed a gymnasium and later the first cinematograph in the city of Meissen.

Another chapter in our family's culinary heritage began with the acquisition of the Golden Barrel in the 1920s: tobacco was processed into fine cigars and sold under the brand "GüSoMei" – Günther & Sohn Meißen. However, with the end of the Second World War, both the inn and the factory closed their doors.

During the GDR era, new life was breathed into the buildings: a consumer cooperative, a laundry, and a saddlery cooperative found their place here. But the economic conditions of those years left their mark – the complex fell into increasing disrepair.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was finally time for a new beginning. With great dedication and passion, our father set about preserving and revitalizing the historic buildings. A particular milestone was the reopening of the "Zum Goldenen Fass" restaurant in October 1994 – just in time for our grandmother's 90th birthday.

Our project and commitment

sustainability

Because it's important to us…

…and you can enjoy it with a good feeling.

Mindfulness plays a central role for us – in our interactions with our guests, but also in our use of resources. Not as a concept, but out of conviction.

We live conscious sustainability – every day and in every season, e.g. with regional and seasonal products in our restaurant, rainwater harvesting in the rooms, in-house charging stations in the hotel complex and vegan natural cosmetics from Vinoble®

For your time out. And for a future to which we consciously contribute.
